Berlin

The Berlin Wall 100 mile (161km) follows the exact route as the Berlin Wall around the city of West Berlin. It is held as close to the 13 August every year to commemorate the separation of the city on that day and also to remember the victims who lost their lives trying to flee from a communist country to freedom.

It is summer in Berlin, very hot and humid which combined with a very flat route made for a challenging event.

The route follows the Berlin Wall, so you get to see a lot of famous landmarks along the way such as The Brandenburg Gate, The Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, and various original sections of the Wall that are still standing. As Berlin is a small city in a very big Forrest, the route takes you through a merriad of forests and past several large lakes and rivers.

There are memorial sites all along the route to commerate a victim of the wall where they were killed by the border guards of the GDR. It makes you think of our freedom and how we take it for granted.

As it is summer in Berlin, the sun only sets at about 21h30, so you have a very long day of running before the headlight comes out.

There were 550 entrants, 450 approx starters and 297 finishers.I finished in 17hours and 35 min which turned out to be 8th male and 9th overall.

It is also my PB in 100 mile racing!

Thank you to Christine Walsh for all you do for me, I know it's not always easy, but in the end, it's all worth it! From the race planning for months on end, the never-ending talk about running, the hours I'm away training, dirty shirts, smelly shorts and all my moods, thank you!!!!

My training partner, Lisa Selwood, who started as a coachee and ended up as my training rock, thank you. Im sometimes pretty shitty at 4.30 am!
